Saint Mary Magdalene

(oil on pane 64x43cm).

Marco Pino da Siena

16th century (Second half).

The panel, of particular interest, is a fragment of a larger composition, in which the figure of Mary Magdalene appears in the act of holding and kissing Christ's arm, marked at the end by the wound in the center of the hand, which indicates the previous removal from the cross. The small surviving trace of this painting, originally of considerable size, suggests that we are in front of the detail of a Deposition or a Pietà and in any case within a Christological circuit whose author can be identified as Marco Pino da Siena. He was not only a regular visitor, but thanks to the charismatic imprint of his graphic matrix, he was above all a popularizer, gaining a large following in the southern pictorial circles of the second half of the sixteenth century.
