Vision of Saint Francis of Assisi

(oil on canvas 47x36 cm).

Southern Late Mannerist Painter

17th century (first half).

The work, of a strictly devotional nature, depicts Saint Francis in the act of supporting Christ crucified. The luministic effect, which enhances the martyrdom of Christ through the evidence of his bleeding wounds, is highlighted by the contrast of the figures with a dark background of Caravaggiolike memory, revisited in a pietistic key according to a practice in use by the Southern Late Mannerists of the early seventeenth century.
