Sacrifice of Isaac

(oil on canvas 107x130 cm).

Francesco Guarino

17th century (first half)

The painting is the result of a personal reworking of the biblical theme, carried out by the painter Francesco Guarino, whose workshop enjoyed the frequentation of the noble Orsini family. The painting demonstrates Guarino's great ability to reinvent a theme among those highly sought after in the southern collections. Although the work shows an advanced degree of assimilation of the pictorial language of the time, it still appears linked to experiences that refer to the painter's initial training, marked by the late Mannerist legacy.
