The sonata from memory

(oil on panel 39x49 cm).

Olga Schiavo (Salerno 1912 – 1991)

First half of the 1930s.

The painting portrays a young woman playing the piano, surrounded by paintings and ceramics, to recall the three fields in which Schiavo tried her hand and always with success, painting, music and ceramics. She began her artistic career at a very young age with Pasquale Avallone as her teacher. From the data consulted, it is clear that Schiavo was a point of reference for female artists in Salerno and it is important to remember that she ran the editorial staff of Salerno for “La Donna Italiana”, a monthly magazine of literature, science, arts and women's social movement.
