Secret Hopes

(oil on canvas 130x75 cm).

Pasquale Avallone (Salerno 1884 – 1965)

Year 1903.

A painting of considerable size, it is of great importance both for the young age of the author and for having opened the doors to the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples to Avallone, thanks to a scholarship offered by the Province of Salerno. It is a painting with twilight atmospheres that allude to the transience of human passions, in which the figure of a young woman in elegant clothes stands out, holding a freshly torn letter in her hands while with sad and reclining eyes she contemplates the portrait of a man, hoping for the return of lost love.
